Britanis was one of Chandris Lines’ longest-serving ships. She was launched in 1931 as ‘Monterey’ serving alongside her sister ‘Lurline’ for Matson Lines offering cruises to Hawaii from the USA. After service as a trooper in the Second World War, the ship went through a number of confusing name changes before finally being sold to Chandris Lines.

Chandris initially operated Britanis as an immigrant liner carrying Greeks and other European passengers to Australia before being dedicated entirely to cruise duties under the ‘Chandris Fantasy Cruises’ brand. In this role she served well into the 1990s before finally sinking en-route to the scrapyard in 2000. A dramatic end to a legendary 65-year-long career!
