THE CRUISE SHIPS

The concept of cruising is a relatively recent invention. Since its widescale introduction in the 1920s, cruise ships of all shapes and sizes have sailed the worlds oceans in the name of relaxation and pleasure and many carry fond memories of golden days spent at sea on board.

MV Adriana

Circa 2019

Adriana is a small cruise ship operating tours around the Mediterranean. She was built as ‘Aquarius’ in 1972 for Hellenic Mediterranean Line and served for many years before being sold for scrap in 2019.

SS AMERIKANIS

Circa 1987

Originally launches as SS Kenya Castle, Amerikanis was one of Chandris’ ever-popular cruisers. Amerikanis was a regular sight in hundreds of ports from New York to Bergen. After a lengthy career she was finally laid-up in 1996 and scrapped in 2000.

SS AUSTRALIS

Launched in 1939 as ‘SS America’ for United States Lines, Australis was Chandris’ flagship and by far the largest ship in the fleet. When first introduced she was painted a dazzling white with blue funnels and the distinctive Chandris ‘X’.

MV BALMORAL

An historic pleasure cruiser operating out of Bristol, the UK. A very fine ship; built and launched in 1949 as a ferry she is still a well-loved cruiser and frequent sight at ports across the British Isles.

SS BRITANIS

After Ellinis was scrapped in the 1980s, the ageing Britanis benefited from her sister’s salvaged parts and her career was extended into the 1990s. Ever the popular cruiser, Britanis was finally sold for scrap in 1998 but sank before she could complete the voyage to the Breakers’ Yard.

Chandris’ beloved dual-purpose liner; Ellinis plied the immigrant trade before becoming a dedicated cruise ship towards the end of her career.

SS GALILEO

Initially operating the Italy-Australia run for Lloyd Triestino, Galileo had a long career and became a popular cruise ship with Chandris Lines after purchase.

M/V Romanza

COGEDAR Lines’ ‘Aurelia’ was sold to Chandris Lines and converted into a cruise ship. In this configuration the plucky little vessel ran regular Mediterranean cruises into the 1990s before being scrapped after a fire.

M/v THE VICTORIA

Originally intending to use the former Incres Line ships ‘Victoria’ for spare parts, Chandris was impressed by the sleek vessel and put her into service where she became an immediate success and served up until the 1990s.
