UNITED STATES LINES
With humble origins operating a pair of former German liners awarded as prizes after the First World War, United States Lines eventually grew to become one of the world’s most renowned passenger liner operators. USL went on to build some of the most glamorous Liners of the 40s, 50s and 60s including SS America and the SS United States, currently one of the world’s last remaining Ocean Liners. USL ceased Liner operations in 1969, focusing on cargo vessels, before finally going under in 1992.
SS AMERICA
Circa 1959
When America was first introduced she was the most modern, slick Liner afloat. This remarkable ship would go on to have an extraordinary 55-year long career with a variety of owners.
SS UNITED STATES
Circa 1955
An engineering triumph, the United States remains the fastest ocean liner of all time and is the largest ocean liner built by the USA.
Designed by acclaimed naval architect William F Gibbs, the SS United States was a monumental engineering achievement. Making use of lessons learned from her chief designer throughout her career as well as the absolute latest in marine propulsion, United States went on to become the fastest ocean liner in history cracking speeds over 35 knots. Today she is moored off Philadelphia, her future precarious. Should she be restored to her former glory she would once again earn her title of ‘America’s Flagship’.
