Mooltan was built and launched in 1923 at the famous Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast. Along with her identical sister 'Maloja', Mooltan worked P&O's Tilbury-Sydney service and proved immensely popular during the jazz age, earning a reputation for steadiness in rough seas.

Beloved by many, Stratheden was one in a series of five famous 'Strath' sisters built for P&O from 1930-1937. Stratheden served as a pleasure cruiser before converting to troopship duties during the Second World War. Following victory in 1945, Stratheden carried thousands from Britain and mainland Europe for new lives in Australia.
