HMAS Sydney was the pride of Australia’s navy when she set out in late 1941 on the home station; after successes in the Mediterranean she had won glory for herself and her grateful home nation. A chance encounter with the auxiliary raider ‘Kormoran’, however, resulted in Australia’s worst naval loss as she was sunk with all hands in the mutually-destructive engagement.

She has fine, balanced lines and a four masts equipped with a suite of cargo derricks for the rapid loading and unloading of cargoes. She was torpedoed and sunk in 1918 but perhaps is most well-known for dashing through the night to provide assistance to Titanic's passengers as the liner foundered.
